Dear parents and concerned members of our community, the middle school has been experiencing a lot of troubling behaviors this year. Our teachers and admin are trying to stay on top of behaviors in the most efficient and straightforward manner possible. When we have a report of behavior, whether it be a violation of school rules or more serious violations of state code, we investigate and then handle according to our discipline policy. When it is appropriate, we alert the proper outside authorities to assist in addressing the situation. We work very closely with the Taylor County Sheriff's Office, the Taylor County Detachment of the State Police, the Taylor County Prosecutor's Office, our local DHHR office, outside counseling agencies and even Marshall University.
The saying goes that it takes a village to raise a child. I have seen the support at the elementary schools with all the children struggling under binders and backpacks as they earnestly pursue their lessons. I have seen the crowds and the support at GHS at the basketball and football games as athletes pursue their athletic careers or students prepare for college or the career field. And then there is the middle school. The beautiful facility on top of the hill with the most number of enrolled students in Taylor County Schools. Unfortunately, our fine facility is becoming tarnished due to the actions of a few over the past few weeks. While issues have been frequent, the entire staff is working together to understand and try to improve the overall culture of our school.
Taylor County Middle School is an amazing place with some truly amazing students. We have amazing teachers and the potential here is vast. However, we are coming off of a pandemic in which all experts are telling us that students nation-wide are two years behind academically where they should be. That two-year lag, caused by the lock down, and the resulting academic frustration and mental health fallout are being felt daily. All that being said, we are working closely with the aforementioned outside agencies, along with the superintendent and our board of education, in order to continue to address challenges faced by our students daily. I would like to take this moment to invite everyone to our next schedule LSIC meeting on February 1, 2022. The typical agenda for the LSIC meetings the last two years include a current reporting of iReady and test scores, discipline numbers, a counselor's update, facilities update, and safety. Parents and stakeholders, please come join our village.
