Working in groups, 5th grade students designed and created chairs (chair, beanbag, stool, etc.) out of newspaper and tape. Once created they were judged on overall design and appearance. Then students had to test their chair. The goal was to have their chair hold someone 2 inches off the ground for 5 seconds. We had one design that accomplished this…the beanbag design! It even went back to its original shape! Great job 5th grade!!

Today in our STEM lab, 5th grade finished building newspaper towers. Given only newspaper and tape, they were to build the tallest tower they could. This is a lead up to their next project of a newspaper chair. 6th, 7th, and 8th grades used our SPHERO robots to create a Simon Says game through code.

Red Ribbon Week is scheduled for Feb 21st-25th. This week is designed to educate students about the dangers of substance abuse. There are a variety of activities scheduled during this week including a visit to our Wellness students by a HealthNet Helicopter, a week-long activity designed to raised awareness about opiod addiction called "Every 11 Minutes", and a visit by Huntington's Fire Chief Jan Radar who will talk with the students about her documentary on Netflix called Herion(e) which talks about the opioid epidemic in Huntington. We are also hoping to do a presentation for parents about the many places students hide drugs in common everyday things called "Hidden in Plain Sight." We will have more information about that presentation once details are locked down. We are hoping this week will open the students' eyes about the dangers of substance abuse.

Parents, we want to give you a heads up on some excitement coming to TCMS. On February 21st we are having an "Aviation Day" where we have people from the aviation industry come to our school and introduce our students to some opportunities in aviation and in our area. We will have instructors, directors, pilots, and trainers from FSU, Pierpont, Aerospace Engineering, as well as an US Army aviator come speak to and answer questions from TCMS students. Given that February 21st is a 2-hour early out we thought it was a great way to engage students on a day where the schedule is not the regular one. We are very excited about this opportunity!

Parents, beginning with the 8th grade year, students all across West Virginia must begin to complete a Personalized Education Plan, also called PEP, as they move forward through high school and into the career of their choice. PEPs help students track graduation requirements, schedule planning for subsequent high school years, and preparation for career choices as they leave high school. Mr. Dooley will be holding a PEP Night for Parents on February 22, 2022 at 6:00 PM in the TCMS Commons to help offer information to parents and students desiring to deepen the discussion. 8th grade students and parents are welcome to come hear, discuss, ask questions, and learn all things about Personalized Education Plans as they help their students prepare for high school graduation. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Dooley, TCMS 7/8 Grade School Counselor, at 304-265-0722, ext 4148 or via email at Jerry.Dooley@k12.wv.us

Parents, now that we are in the second semester and you have received report cards, I want to remind you of our Afterschool Learning program. This program provides math and reading support along with homework assistance. There are also opportunities for enrichment and recreational activities. Our LSIC provided feedback that parents may appreciate a list of teachers that are working the program and their specialty areas so that if your child needs help with a specific subject or would like an extra opportunity to work with a certain teacher you can more accurately direct them in the program. Applications are available in the office and the program does provide a meal and transportation and runs until 5 pm. - Sam Myers - 5th grade math and science - Hayley Crites - 5th grade social studies and ELA - Heidi Reed - 5th grade math - Autumn Young - 6th grade ELA - Dave Poling - 7th grade social studies - David Hendershot - 7th grade science - Samantha Newlon - 8th grade math - Melinda Ferris - 8th grade ELA - Jennifer Roberts - special ed services in math, ELA, social studies and science - Megan Andrews - special ed services in math and ELA - Nate Scott - special ed services in math, ELA, social studies and science
